Tour Overview

The Secrets of the Topical North Photo Tour 2021 is a truely unique experience is Australia’s incredible tropical north. Based at two amazing locations in Cairns and Port Douglas you be taken to locations that no other tours will take you too by utilising the skills and knowledge of local legendary Tropical North Photographer Mitchell Burns.

Mitchell knows so much about the area and he has put together something truly unique that will leave you with some of the most breath taking images and memories that will stay with you forever.

A detailed day by day itinerary is listed below, however a few of the highlights of this tour will be photographing waterfalls the general public just don’t go to, trips to the Daintree and Fitzroy Island and some other very secret locations that Mitch has been kind enough to show us. If you finish that all off with a helicopter ride over the reef you will be left with a huge smile on your face.

If we have time there may be some classroom sessions but we have jam packed this for you to really get the most images possible. This is a full inclusive luxury tour, the accommodation is brilliant, the food will be great and the photographic opportunities will be spectacular.

What to bring

  • A DSLR Camera with lens/lenses
  • Spare batteries, there will be a long days with plenty of shooting.
  • A sturdy tripod.
  • Remote shutter release.
  • Filters if you have them (Polarizer/Graduated/Neutral Density).
  • Good water proof walking shoes.

Tour Overview

Glenn Mckimmin is a professional landscape photographer from Australia with 15 years of diverse industry experience. He loves what he does for a living and generously helps others discover the life-changing benefits of photography. Glenn will be running this tour with local Tropical North up and coming photographer, Mitchell Burns.

We consider this to be an incredible experience that will leave you wanting more. This new Residency Series includes a lot of classroom help to allow you to further understand the preparations and commitment that goes into landscape photography

Day 1 – October 9th – Palm Cove Accomodation

We will meet on Saturday afternoon where you will get settled into your room before joining us for a sunset shoot and then dinner and a discussion about the expectations for the tour.

Day 2 – October 10th – Palm Cove and Fitzroy Island

We will start the day today with a Sunrise down at the beach at picturesque Palm Cove. We will return for breakfast and then head out again to catch out tour to Fitzroy Island.

For the afternoon we will be out with Mitch leading us to some incredible local waterfalls, namely Crystal cascade and Isabela falls. After a huge day shooting it will be back to the hotel for drinks and some dinner.

Day 3 – October 11th – Waterfall Day

Depending on the conditions we will be shooting a sunrise at either one of these local beaches – Clifton, Trinity or Ellis Beach. Then back to the hotel for breakfast.

The rest of this day will be an action packed waterfall loop shooting the following falls –  Josephine, The Boulders Millaa Milla,  Zillie,  Ellinjaa Falls and if we have time the very special Nandroya falls. This day will leave you getting some incredible images, doing a bit of hiking and feeling very work out, it now back to accomodation to relax with dinner and drinks.

Day 4 – October 12th – Port Douglas

Depending on the conditions we will be shooting a sunrise at either one of these local beaches – Clifton, Trinity or Ellis Beach. Then back to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast we will make our way to Port Douglas where we will spend the next few nights. Along the way Mitch will be showing us some of his favourite coastal scenes to photograph. We will end the day with a sunset at either Sugar wharf or Mangroves which is tide dependant.

Day 5 – October 13th  – Helicopter and Mossman Gorge  

Sunrise today will be at another incredible location, 4 mile Beach. It will be back to hotel as usual for breakfast and then another massive day of shooting awaits you.

Today is the day (weather and conditions permitting) that we jump into the Helicopters and head out over one of the most iconic locations in Australia, The Great Barrier Reef. Our experienced pilots and our local legend Mitchell will hand pick locations based on the conditions on the day and leave you with an array of images that many will envy.

After you have all had your fix of helicopter flights the afternoon will be spent out at another local iconic location, Mossman Gorge. We will finish the day with a sunset at one of the following locations depending on the weather – Sugar wharf, The Marina, The Mangroves or the Cane fields. We have plenty of options the we can choose from.

Day 6 – October 14th – Mareeba and Atherton Tablelands

Today is a very special one and our last full day of shooting, we want you to leave on a high and we have no doubt that the drive and shooting opportunities through Mareeba at Emerald Creek Falls will be fantastic before we head further up into the Atherton Tablelands to photograph the Dead trees at Tinaroo and also Curtain Fig Tree.  There is so much to explore and we guarantee you will be leaving with some unique images of an absolute stunning location.

Its then back a bit of a drive back to the hotel for a farewell dinner and a few drinks.

Day 7 – October 15th – Home

It is time to say our goodbyes and head off to our respective homes and hopefully time to review the incredible images you were able to capture.

Included in Secrets of the Topical North Photo Tour 2021 cost:

Services of 2 professional photographic tour leaders, photographic tuition and workshops (suitable for any levels or ability). Internal travel and transfers. Minimum 4-star accommodation with private bathrooms on twin share / double basis.  All meals are included (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Not included in Secrets of the Topical North Photo Tour 2021 cost:

Travel to Palm Cove, alcohol, extra drinks, room service, laundry,  gifts, souvenirs and any extras purchased. Travel insurance – a compulsory condition of booking. Camera or other optional insurances are not included.

Fitness Level

The Australian Wild Alpine Photography Tour requires a high level of physical fitness. There are occasional extensive walks on uneven terrain, and where possible we would like our guests to be able to walk for a few hours at a time hour if needed. Check with your tour guide before leaving and we can give you a better idea of any special fitness requirements you may need to complete the Tour.

Private Guided Tours

If groups are not for you and you would prefer to travel by yourself or with a group of friends and family then we can accommodate your needs by customizing a Photography Tour to suit your individual needs, schedule, budget and interests.
