USA Storm Chasing
Photography Tour 2020
Join Rod Thomas on this thrilling, all inclusive storm chasing adventure through tornado alley in the United States of America.
Beginning and ending in Denver, Colorado, our storm chasing adventure will see us traverse our way across the USA chasing mother nature where ever she decides to show her face. Typically, a chase could see us explore Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, The Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and / or New Mexico.
Storms tend to typically fire later in the day so our mornings will be spent making our way to the target location and the waiting for mother nature to do her thing. Watching a storm from its infancy turn into a super cell is amazing. Getting to capture this all on camera is even better.
Days can be long, and sometimes there are down days where no storms are forecast. We can use these down days to either chill out and rest, or we can explore the local area in search other things to photograph. Motels will be clean and comfortable, Meals will be arranged on the go.
Our guides are well experienced in storm chasing and will get us to the best locations for photographing these epic structures. Some tours get you up close and personal and while this is ok, we prefer a wider view to get us the best photographs we can possibly get.
It is an awesome feeling standing there watching these storms unfold and to witness this is something you wont forget in a hurry. We invite you to join us on this 12 day epic road trip/chase-cation across Tornado Alley in the USA.

A normal photography tour has a fairly structured itinerary with specific detail on locations and travel, this tour is unique in the sense that our intinerary will be set on the fly, we will be following the call of nature and booking accomodation and dining as we move between storm cells.
Typically, a chase could see us explore Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, The Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and /or New Mexico.
As is with the unpredicability of mother nature, we will have a number of back up plans for photographic opportunity should no storm cell be brewing on any particular day. This could include shooting open plains, native wildlife, street photogrphy, or if the group decides we can have rest day and explore local culture.
Tornadoes can be detected before or as they occur through the use of Pulse-Doppler radar by recognizing patterns in velocity and reflectivity data, such as hook echoes or debris balls.
There are several scales for rating the strength of tornadoes. The Fujita scale rates tornadoes by damage caused and has been replaced in some countries by the updated Enhanced Fujita Scale. An F0 or EF0 tornado, the weakest category, damages trees, but not substantial structures. An F5 or EF5 tornado, the strongest category, rips buildings off their foundations and can deform large skyscrapers. The similar TORRO scale ranges from a T0 for extremely weak tornadoes to T11 for the most powerful known tornadoes. Doppler radar data, photogrammetry, and ground swirl patterns (trochoidal marks) may also be analyzed to determine intensity and assign a rating.
A supercell is a thunderstorm characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft. For this reason, these storms are sometimes referred to as rotating thunderstorms. Of the four classifications of thunderstorms (supercell, squall line, multi-cell, and single-cell), supercells are the overall least common and have the potential to be the most severe. Supercells are often isolated from other thunderstorms, and can dominate the local weather up to 32 kilometres (20 mi) away. They tend to last 2-4 hours.
